Myeongdong: The Tourist Hub
Myeongdong is the most visitor-friendly neighborhood in Seoul — busy, well-signed in multiple languages, and packed with street food, cosmetics shops, and department stores. It's not where locals hang out, but it delivers exactly what most first-time visitors expect: convenience and density.
Eat: the street food alley behind the main shopping street. Try egg bread (계란빵), tornado potatoes, and the famous cheese lobster gratin stalls. Budget ₩15,000–25,000 for a snack crawl.
Hongdae: Young, Creative, and Always Awake
Hongdae (Hongik University area) is where Seoul goes to be young. Street performances on weekends, independent clothing boutiques, art galleries, and bars that stay open until 6am. The energy here is different from anywhere else in the city — louder, less polished, more fun.
Best time: Friday or Saturday evening. The street performers start around 7pm and the clubs fill up after midnight. Plan to stay late or stay overnight.
Insadong: Traditional Crafts and Tea Houses
Insadong is the best neighborhood for Korean crafts, calligraphy tools, antiques, and traditional tea. The main pedestrian street is tourist-heavy but manageable; the side alleys (Ssamziegil courtyard especially) are more interesting. Good for gifts that aren't mass-produced.
Bukchon Hanok Village
A residential neighborhood of traditional hanok houses perched between Gyeongbokgung Palace and Changdeokgung. Photogenic in the early morning before the crowds arrive. Note: people actually live here — keep noise down and respect the "quiet please" signs.
Best visited: 8–9am on a weekday. By 11am the tour groups arrive. The narrow alleys between houses on the upper slopes have the best views.
Itaewon: International Food and Nightlife
Itaewon is Seoul's most international neighborhood — historically the area around the US military base. It has the best selection of non-Korean food (Mexican, Indian, Middle Eastern, French), a large LGBTQ+ scene, and a nightlife strip. It went through a difficult period after the 2022 crowd crush but has largely recovered.
Gangnam: Polished, Expensive, and Worth One Night
Gangnam is what most people imagine when they think of wealthy Seoul: wide boulevards, high-end restaurants, Coex Mall (the largest underground mall in Asia), and the K-Star Road. It's expensive for accommodation and food compared to the north side of the Han River, but worth visiting for at least one dinner or evening out.
Where to Stay
First-time visitors: Myeongdong or Insadong for walkability and transit access.
Nightlife focused: Hongdae or Itaewon.
Business travel: Gangnam (near COEX).
Budget: Mapo-gu or Sinchon, near Hongdae but slightly cheaper.
