Getting around Korea is genuinely easy, even without knowing Korean. The transport network is fast, affordable, and well-signposted in English.
T-money Card — Get This First
Before anything else, pick up a T-money card at any convenience store (GS25, CU, 7-Eleven) near the airport. Load it with cash and use it on subways, buses, and taxis across the country. You get a small discount on fares compared to paying cash, and transfers are automatic.
Cost: ₩3,000 for the card, then top up as needed.
Subway — Best Way Around Cities
Seoul's subway system is one of the largest in the world with 9 main lines and English signage throughout. Trains run from around 5:30am to midnight. The app Kakao Maps or Naver Map will give you accurate subway directions.
Fare: ₩1,400–1,800 per trip within Seoul, depending on distance.
KTX — High-Speed Train Between Cities
The KTX connects Seoul to Busan in 2.5 hours, Gyeongju in about 2 hours, and Jeju via boat. Book in advance on the Korail website or the Korail Talk app — seats sell out on weekends and holidays. It's significantly faster than taking a bus and more comfortable.
Seoul → Busan KTX: From ₩59,800 standard class.
Intercity Bus — Budget Option
For destinations the KTX doesn't cover, intercity buses (고속버스) are reliable and cheap. Express Bus Terminal in Seoul connects to most major cities. Kobus.co.kr lets you book online.
Taxi
Taxis are affordable and available everywhere. Use Kakao T app to hail one — it works like Uber and drivers can see your destination written in Korean automatically. Standard taxis start at ₩4,800. Late-night fares (midnight–4am) are slightly higher.
Getting to/from Incheon Airport
- AREX Express Train: 43 minutes direct to Seoul Station. ₩9,500. Fastest option.
- AREX All-Stop: ~60 minutes, stops at Hongdae and other stations. ₩4,950.
- Airport Bus (Limousine): Slower but drops you near major hotels. ₩16,000–18,000.
- Taxi: Approx ₩60,000–80,000 to central Seoul. Use Kakao T.
Tips
