Incheon: Chinatown and Songdo (40min from Seoul)
Incheon's Chinatown is Korea's only official Chinatown — small but genuinely interesting, with 19th-century architecture, jajangmyeon (black bean noodle) restaurants, and a street art district. Adjacent Songdo is a purpose-built smart city with a Central Park modeled on New York's — worth a half-hour walk.
Gyeongju: Ancient Capital (2h by KTX)
Gyeongju was the capital of the Silla Kingdom for nearly 1,000 years and is often called "the museum without walls." Royal burial mounds in the city center, Bulguksa Temple (UNESCO, 35 min by bus), Seokguram Grotto (Buddhist rock shrine, 30 min further up the mountain), and Anapji Pond. A full day barely scratches the surface; if you're serious about history, stay overnight.
Nami Island (1.5h from Seoul)
A small river island famous for its tree-lined roads and the Korean drama "Winter Sonata." Quieter in weekdays; popular with couples. Entry + ferry: ₩16,000. Best in autumn (October) for foliage, or spring (April) for cherry blossoms. Combine with a visit to the Garden of Morning Calm (아침고요수목원) nearby.

The Hanok Village (전주한옥마을) is a large preserved neighborhood of traditional houses now filled with restaurants, craft shops, and small guesthouses. Arrive hungry and spend the afternoon eating. The KTX drops you close to the center.
DMZ: The Demilitarized Zone (1.5h from Seoul)
A guided tour of the DMZ — the 4km-wide buffer zone between North and South Korea — is one of the most historically significant experiences available in Asia. Tours typically include the Joint Security Area (JSA) at Panmunjom, the 3rd Infiltration Tunnel dug by North Korea, and Dora Observatory overlooking the North. Book through authorized tour operators in Seoul (₩60,000–90,000). North Korean side access requires additional permits and is less commonly visited.
